Antoni Gaudí's Narrative in Stone
Most visitors walk Passeig de Gràcia and see a beautiful, colourful facade. They take a photo and move on. But Casa Batlló is not just a building; it is a legendary story written in stone, ceramic and iron. Remodelled by Antoni Gaudí between 1904 and 1906 for the wealthy Batlló family, the house represents the mythical battle of Saint George (Sant Jordi), Catalonia’s patron saint, against the dragon. A local guide walks you through the details of the Eixample district’s architectural war, decoding the bone-shaped columns, the skull-like balconies, and the undulating roof that resembles the back of a sleeping reptile. You will leave seeing the avenue with new eyes.
Tour Highlights
- The legend of Sant Jordi: how Gaudí embedded Catalonia’s patron saint narrative into a private residence.
- The Illa de la Discòrdia (Block of Discord), where rival Modernista architects competed side by side.
- The facade details: the columns of bones, the skull balconies, and the trencadís ceramic skin.
- The history of Passeig de Gràcia, from a garden road to the luxury epicentre of the Catalan bourgeoisie.
- The less-known neighbours: Casa Amatller, Casa Lleó Morera, Casa Mulleras and Casa Bonet.
- A private walk for your group of up to nine, with a licensed guide’s full attention.
What You Will See
Casa Batlló Facade:
The Sant Jordi Code
The centrepiece of the walk. Your guide decodes the iconography of the facade: the dragon-scale roof, the sword-like cross tower plunged into the beast’s back, the balconies shaped like the skulls of victims, and the princess’s balcony near the top.
The Noble Floor Exterior & Bone Columns
Up close at the street level, the columns supporting the main gallery look like the bones and tendons of a prehistoric creature. Gaudí redesigned the lower facade using stone from Montjuïc to open up large gallery windows that let light pour into the noble family’s apartments.
The Illa de la Discòrdia (Block of Discord)
Casa Batlló stands on a block where three major Modernista architects built side by side for rival industrial families. You will compare Gaudí’s work with the Flemish-inspired Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and the floral, elegant Casa Lleó Morera by Lluís Domènech i Montaner.
Casa Mulleras & Casa Bonet
The two often-overlooked buildings that complete the Block of Discord. Casa Mulleras, designed by Enric Sagnier, offers a sober classical contrast, while Casa Bonet, by Marcel·lià Coquillat, shows the eclectic transitional styles of the period.
The Gràcia Avenue History
Passeig de Gràcia was once a quiet road connecting the old walled city of Barcelona to the independent village of Gràcia. Your guide explains how the Eixample expansion transformed this avenue into a showcase of industrial wealth and artistic rivalry.
The Modernista Street Furniture
The avenue is decorated with organic street lamps and benches designed by Pere Falqués in 1906. The white trencadís tile benches and the iron lamp posts complement the surrounding architecture, showing how Modernisme extended into the civic space.
