From a House to a Basilica
The two buildings on this tour are the same idea at two scales. Casa Batlló is Gaudí working for one wealthy family, taking a plain town house on Passeig de Gràcia and reskinning it, between 1904 and 1906, into bone, water and the back of a sleeping dragon. The Sagrada Família is the same architect taking the same instinct, that a building should grow the way nature grows, and aiming it at something far larger: a basilica he expected to outlive him, and did. Reading the house first, from the street, trains your eye on the small moves, the balconies shaped like bone, the tiled skin that shifts from sea to sky. Then you go inside the basilica and watch those moves go vertical, columns branching like trees and light pouring through coloured glass. A licensed local guide carries one thread from the dragon to the nave, so three hours reads as a single line, not two tickets. The name says it plainly: from dragons to God.
Tour Highlights
- Two Gaudí landmarks read as one idea at two scales, from a private house to a basilica.
- Casa Batlló from the street: the bone balconies, the dragon-back roof, and the Sant Jordi legend in the tiles.
- The Block of Discord, where three rival architects built next door and refused to agree.
- The Sagrada Família from the inside: the tree-columns, the worked light, and the geometry behind both.
- A clear through-line from the small moves on the house to the same moves made monumental.
- A private group of up to nine, with a licensed guide’s full attention for the whole walk.
What You Will See
Casa Batlló:
The House of Bones
The start point, on Passeig de Gràcia. Gaudí did not build this house, he remade an existing one between 1904 and 1906, which is what makes it so readable: every change is a decision. The balconies look like bone, the lower columns like tendons, the roof like the scaled back of a dragon pierced by Sant Jordi’s cross. From the street your guide shows how the trencadís skin shifts colour as it climbs, water below, sky above, so the whole front reads as a dive into the sea.
The Block of Discord
The block where Casa Batlló stands shoulder to shoulder with Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch and Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Montaner. Three leading Modernista architects, three completely different answers, built within a few years of each other for rival industrialist families. The row explains what Gaudí was reacting against, and how much further he was willing to push.
The Sagrada Família:
The Facades
A short metro ride east. Before going in, your guide reads the two finished facades from outside: the Nativity facade Gaudí completed himself, dense and organic, and the Passion facade by Josep Maria Subirachs, deliberately harsh and stripped back. The contrast tees up what the interior is about to do.
The Sagrada Família:
The Forest of Columns
Inside, the columns branch like trees as they rise, splitting to carry the vaults the way a trunk splits into limbs. This is the small logic of the dragon house made monumental. Your guide explains the geometry Gaudí used and why he was sure a building should hold itself up the way a forest does, from within, rather than be propped from outside like a Gothic cathedral.
The Sagrada Família:
The Worked Light
The stained glass runs warm where the sun rises and cool where it sets, so the colour shifts across the stone through the day. Your guide shows you where to stand and when, and why Gaudí treated light as a building material in its own right. It is the closing line of the walk: the sea-and-sky skin of Casa Batlló, now made to glow at the scale of a basilica.

Your Guide
A Licensed Local Guide
Licensed Official Guide · Barcelona
Your tour is led by a licensed official local guide. Barcelona requires guides at its heritage sites to hold an official licence, and your guide for this tour holds one. Your guide prepares the walk around the single thread from the dragon house to the basilica, so a private group of up to nine has their full attention throughout. Different guides lead on different days; each works only with your party.
This tour is always led by an official licensed guide.
No. This tour reads Casa Batlló from the street and goes inside the Sagrada Família. The house facade carries most of Gaudí’s argument, and keeping it to the street holds the walk to three hours and the price to one combined ticket.
Yes, for the Sagrada Família interior. Entry is not included in the tour price. Book at sagradafamilia.org. After you confirm your myBCN tour, we advise on the right time slot so your guide can meet you with time in hand.
Several days ahead at least, more in peak season from March to October. The basilica caps visitor numbers and sells out, so do not leave it to the day before.
Yes. Only your group, up to 9 people, with your guide’s full attention for the whole walk.
It is a short metro ride east from Passeig de Gràcia. Your guide travels with you and gives clear directions; the metro fare is not included.
Yes. The dragon roof and the forest of columns hold the attention of children and adults alike. The walking is steady with some standing; comfortable shoes help.
