Before the arrival of the Romans, the area that would become Barcelona was home to the Laietani, one of the many Iberian tribes scattered across the peninsula. They lived in fortified hilltop settlements and engaged in agriculture, metallurgy, and trade, particularly with the Phoenicians and Greeks. Though no written language of theirs survives, archaeological finds show a distinct and sophisticated local culture that formed the earliest roots of the city.
